Default 2004 base model auto, should the shifting panel light up?

Question because I just noticed this tonight..

On my 2004 Civic base model sedan, 4 door automatic shift with shifter in the center console, should the gear numbers, neutral N and reverse R light up at night or are the only indicator lights on the dash board?

Well that's terrible then.

Yesterday I took out the radio to put in an adapter behind it. I had to take off the shifter trim panels but how would that have made the wires connected to the light there get knocked around?

Ugh. Now I need to take the whole thing apart again to try to figure out what I did wrong that would have caused lights to go out.

So maybe they don't light up and we are just imagining things?

Does anyone know for sure?
