2013 Oil Changes
 

Hey guys, I got a 2013 EX about two months ago and because of the job I was in, (not anymore thankfully) I was driving a lot. I have already put 5600km on it and the oil life is at about 40% so I'm taking it in for an oil change soon. So far, (knock on wood) everything is running swimmingly and the car is great. Especially on the 407 in Ontario.

I want to baby this car and keep it for a long time I really love it. I only got my license at 22 and am about 25 now so I'm not a typical car guy with a strong technical knowledge. Can anyone give me some general advice about anything unique to maintaining a civic? Maintenance things I can do or things to watch out for to keep the car as close to pristine as possible.

Also the dealership said don't get an oil change until 15% I think that is a little much. I want to get one now at 40% is that too soon?

We have a 2007 EX 4DR Manual since new with 168,000 kM on the OD PLUS about 20,000 kM as a Toad behind the Motor Home which does not register on the OD.

Since 95% of our mileage is at highway speeds I go by the on board scheduler which works out to be about 9-10,000 kM per change. If you commute in the city then 40% would be a good plan.

I change the oil and filter, check the liquids and tire pressure.

A long time ago, it was recommended practice to change out the oil that comes with a new car sooner than usual, because of "break in" debris. Manufacturers don't say that any more because it drives up "maintenance costs" which are used in some car rankings.

No matter what age of the car, check the oil level and other stuff under the hood periodically, like every time you fill up the gas. Leaks can develop and the car won't warn you of a low oil level until it is too late.
