Turn the headlights on and watch when you try to start the car with the key. In the daytime you can used the dome light. If the lights dim severely or go out, check the connections at the battery. The battery could also be run down or defective.
If the lights stay on and the click you hear is [i]from the starter[i], the starter is almost certainly bad. Also check the ground wires on the engine and transmission. You can measure voltage between the big terminal on the starter and starter ground while trying to start, if it stays up but click and no start, definitely bad starter.
