96 civic down stream o2 sensor?.?.?

so i got a 1996 civic and the down stream O2 sensor is out in it. what exactly does it do for the car? any advise or input would be welcome.

The only thing that sensor does is check the performance of the cat converter and turn on the check engine light if it doesn't look right. The car will work the same without it, but the CEL will be on all the time and you couldn't pass a smog check because of that.

well i dont have to pass a smog test i live in oregon. so is there a by pass sensor for cheap that i can buy instead of paying 80 vucks for something that the car does not really need?

LOL the car does need it. Probably will get better gas mileage if you replace it. If you still want some cheap fix that may or may not fix the problem, look for a "de-fouler".
