97 civic lx keyless entry FOB issue
At some point during the year the keyless entry quit working. Press the lock or unlock button on the key FOB and you get nothing. Dead battery you ask? The small red light at the top of the FOBs (yes, on both of them) are lit... continuously. Eventually one battery dies and it gets replaced. The small red light again stays lit relentlessly.
I try resetting the FOBs by using the "secret" button on the radio, and after holding it down and the locks cycle, signaling entry into the program mode, I press the FOBs but it does nothing. The small red light remains lit. I go in and open a beer, defeated. Anyone experience a problem similar to this with their key FOBs at any point? I thought perhaps one may've gone bad, but for both to quit simultaneously seemed strange. The car's system seems to be functioning so I'm leaning towards an issue with the FOBs, just can't understand why the lights on both of them stay lit ALL THE TIME. Thanks in advance. |

After replacing the battery, you must press the lock or unlock button 5-6 times to activate the transmitter. Have you tried this procedure?
Is the battery the correct type? Have the transmitters been water damaged? Have you tried storing the transmitter codes (see diagram below)? You might also try disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a minute, reconnecting, and then activating the transmitter as mentioned above. Attachment 24844 |
The battery type was/is correct. When you put a new one in (polarity correct as well), the small red light comes on and stays on.
Disconnected the car battery for a good 10-15 minutes, no help there. Followed the directions to a T, to no avail. The car responds when I hit the valet switch, but hitting the remotes does nothing. No water damage known, they both just went kaput. Considering finding another FOB and trying to set it to my car. Thanks for the diagram , that's a nice find. |

SOLUTION!!!
I too had the red light stay on once I replaced the battery. The worked for me, but maybe isn't for everyone. Hopefully it'll shed some light on the problem (no pun intended). I took my fob apart all the way and inspected it carefully. I noticed that one of the connections on the bottom of the circuit board was broken. It was between the solder weld and a little brown box. This broken connection caused the red light to stay on. I applied a good amount of solder to the joint and voila, the red light finally turned off. I used the reprogramming instructions for my car and it worked. So if your red light LED is on 24/7, you probably have a short someone on the circuit. I suspect that this was the original battery died (i.e. connection broke, light stayed on, battery died). I hope that this helps someone else out too. Good Luck!!! |
Keyless Entry Remote Programming Issue
Hey, I'm new here, so my apologies if there's already an answer to this or if I need to post as a new thread. Just let me know.
My issue is that when I try to program the keyless entry fob on my 1997 Honda Civic Ex, nothing happens. I turn the key to the on position and hold down the valet button until the door locks actuate. All good so far. Then I try to click a button on the remote, but nothing happens. The light on the remote lights up, so it seems to have good battery power. I'm guessing either the remote is not transmitting or the receiver is not receiving. Any pointers on how to test if the remote is putting out a signal? Any additional diagnostics to walk through? Thanks! |
Problem Solved!
I not continuing to hold the valet button down until after I pressed the remote button. Sometimes you just need to slow down a little... |
