I have a 98 honda civic lx. with almost 300,000 miles on it. ive had it 4 years and other then it being stolen twice i haven't had any issues with it until lately. its been starting to sputter on me. today was the worse. it sputtered quiet a bit.. so i took it home put a code reader on it and the only code was 0420. the clogged catalytic converter code. a few min later i tried to start it and it wouldnt start at all. it would turn over but not start.. i checked my fuses .. i just recently changed my plugs and wires and cap. so i no thats not it. went out a couple hours later and it started .. no problems. could this be a fuel issues or an 02 sensor . or could my cat be so clogged that it didnt want to start? would fuel issues throw a 0420 code?

 

hey have you found the issue at all by chance i have to same problem same code and spuddders and back fires under acceleration ive seen some other videos and im thinking its a cracked exhaust manifold or in fact a clogged converter

 

mine wasn't back fireing.. when I posted that it just wouldn't start after it was warmed up.. once I fixed that it was one thing after another .. i've done alot of work to it since that post .. but with that incident .. I changed my fuel relay, fuel filter , fuel pump . Pretty much everything that had to do with fuel . Then replaced my coil, maf sensor, bottum o2 sensor, air idle control valve , the ingion control module , cap, rotor , plugs , and good wires plus cleaned the throttle body, so far so good. still have the 0420 code but at least it's running again

 

yeah i changed my fuel pump my plugs last year the distributor is good and i mean it was crashed in the front so im wondering if it really isnt a cracked manifold i havent really dugg into it because since then purchased new vehicles but i love my honda had big plans for it but what ever just need a lil fixing upping but im pretty sure im going to go k series soon when i start to rebuild it

 

I'm not into Hondas that much .. Volkswagens are more my thing . but i was having issues with that . so my boyfriend bought me the Honda.. he thought it would be funny . that was 4yrs ago.. i haven't had any issues with it at all till this past October. and since then it has been one thing after another. todays issue my starter is now going out, and the idle is high again. code reader says the iac is malfunctioning . that's nice cause I've already replaced that 6 weeks ago cleaned the throttle body twice, new gasket , new maf sensor and i have no vacuum leaks.. from what i can tell.. did do some reading though and it could be my intake gasket.. witch could also throw the 0420 code with the 0505 code. so that's were I'm at next.. K series ? are those the v tech motors?
