Angry 99 Civic EX - AT shifter problem

The shifter handle from my 99 Honda Civic EX (Automatic) came loose and pulled off. I still had the screws and I was able to put it back on. The problem is, once I screw the handle back on, it doesn't think it's in park anymore and will not let me take the key out of the ignition. As soon as I unscrew the handle and let it sit on the shifter loosely, the car will let me take the key out. It makes absolutely no sense as everything was just working right before the handle came off. I've looked at the parts list for a shifter **** assembly for this model of car and i'm not missing any parts. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Tips?
