99 Civic - Muffler
Hi,
I had changed the whole stuff...front pipe, center pipe, backpipe, muffler in 2004 and the front pipe broke again and now forced to change the whole thing, as centre pipe, backpipe and muffler are rusted and anytime...
$550 for parts and $110. for labor...Did I get ripped or is this normal.
This is in Struass Auto service center.
Front pipe $171
center pipe $166
backpipe $32
muffler $100
Gasket, gasket, spring bolt kit, clamp $81
Let me know....next time I can shop around if this is high
Thanks

Since then, nothing else has rusted. I am confused. Did you look at the muffler pipes (all three of them yourself?) There is no reason to replace rusty pipes unless they have a hole in them and cause a loud noise and poor emissions.
I certainly think that you got ripped off though. $660 is a lot for a couple of pipes and a muffler. My muffler was around $120 with a lifetime warranty from Autozone. All the connector bolts can be reused and there is no reason to purchase anything else but the pipes.
I didn't see myself.
Two months back I took it a shell gasstation as I heard some noise at low speed.
The guy put the car in the lift and pointed that the front pipe connection is loose and tightened it. He also mentioned that the other pipes are rusting. I too looked, but as I'm not a hands-on guy with car, can't say much. Now the front pipe had a hole I guess and they suggested to change all...front,center,back,muffler with gaskets/bolts/springs so that it's better and hence $550 for the parts...
I know i got ripped off....
So next time around, i should go to small shop mechanic and get this fixed????

well, only if you can trust the guy. I'd check it out first and make sure I can identify what part is broken. as I said in my earlier post, I have never had anything go wrong with the very front pipe. The center and the muffler went bad over time.
I don't think we are talking about the same parts however. when you say front, you really mean the really long piece which might look to you like it is 3 pieces put together but they cannot be replaced separately. It is a single piece welded together. It is identified as #17 in the 1st picture above.
If that is the case, that B pipe which is what I think it is called is a relatively cheap part. it costs $113 from the dealer and you should be able to find it much cheaper from a non-dealer. so yeah, you got ripped off bad. next time double check what is broken and fix only what is broken. rusted and rusted through are 2 different things. You replace only when it is rusted through.

Any time you arent sure whats wrong and take it to a mechanic. Ask them to show you whats wrong and why it needs replaced, I emphasize on SHOW, because anybody can talk uyou into something if you trust them enough. As soon as somebody knows that you don't know its 10 times easier to scam you with something like this. It goes for anything on your car. If they tell you your brakes are bad and you need new rotors, then have them show you why. If you can't understand then tell them and if they still can't reasonably prove it to you, go somewhere else.
