Default 99 civic, need help please....

i have a 1999 civic ex with an automatic transmission....earlier in the year, i had to replace the drive axle that goes into the side of the transmission, after that, the trans didnt seem to want to work, however, if u start the car off in low, it will go and shift (but kinda hard) to the next gears until it gets to D, then it the rpms will increase.....but the car wont increase in speed...the D4 light is flashing (where it has P, R, D4, D3 and so on)....would anyone have a guess as to what this may be? i know that the motor is not the original one, but the tranny is...could the computer be the one that goes to the other engine? how would i find this out? thanx for any help

are you sure the cv axle is pushed in all the way into the trans?

Check the fluid level. When you pull an axle out, some fluid will run out and needs to be replaced. Or like '94 said, if the axle isn't all the way in, it will leak. Use only Honda ATF, not generic ATF from a parts store. Make sure that your mechanic didn't put generic ATF into it. Do not drive the car if the transmission is acting up like it was, it will quickly cause further damage.

the fluid level is not low, nor is it leaking anywhere, im not sure why the D4 would be flashing though.....it goes in low all the way up to drive.....

D4 flashes because the computer has detected slippage in the transmission (there are input and output speed sensors). In this condition, the computer will only allow gears 1-3 to work; it will lock out 4.
