air box ?
hey guys
i recently inherited a pretty nice 2003 honda civic lx, its vtec. problem was, it wasn't run for a year so the mice took over.I took apart the whole air system and cleaned it all. My question is, the huge black strange shaped box (resonating chamber???) before the actual airfilter. What is that and it's purpose? It is filled with nuts, mice piss, and crap. I can't open it because it looks like it's not designed to do so. Can I run the car without it? just use the regular air filter? will it affect performance or mpg? thanks |
would be nice to have pix with your description, but would suspect it your air filter box in the engine compartment? You can run without the box just be sure to have some type of filter for the intake.

you do not need the resonator box
pics are nice, in-case you think your throttle body is the resonator box (not that you would) but just buy a $5 tube and a K&N filter or equivalent and make a SRI |

The resonator box makes the stock system quieter. It doesn't do anything else.

That black box is a sound trap, sand trap and a water trap. If prevents or minimizes those three things from getting in or out of the engine. If all the three is of no concern to you, just remove it as it is an additional restriction and reduces the engines power.

Do you know where I can get that tube? or what size diameter? thanks for the help. it's def the resonator not the air box that I am talking about. I like your quote, Montesquieu?
the tube differs, and i have the d16y7. But pep boys even sells them just for cars, can see what size those are and get the same thing for a fraction of the price at home depot. Altho the pepboys one would have the O2 sensor cut out for you. but all you need is a tube that will be snug about the intake manifold and then fit whatever filter you want, itll sound cooler and youll feel a little difference. |
