Default Air diverter selection all mixed up

Hi everyone and thanks for reading this.

I have a problem with a 1996 Civic where the button pushed for where to send the air in the car doesn't correspond to where it comes out. For example, if it's set to the floor / vent position, the air actually comes out the front window defrost. All the buttons do something, they just don't do what they're supposed to!
Is there a way to reset this?

Thanks!

Check the mode control motor, linkage, and doors for smooth operation:

The motor does run apparently, but stops in the wrong position. Possibly the crank arm has slipped on the motor shaft, or the gears are stripped inside. It almost has to be the motor.

I'm pretty sure the motor is on the left (driver's) side of the heater box, should be able to reach it by crawling into the floor area and look up near the gas pedal.
