Its on the left side when your looking at the bumper. The EVAP canister is going to purge when the throttle is between idle and WOT. So it does sound like the canister is purging, but since the lines haven't been connected, maybe it is purging into the atmosphere, hence the smell of fuel vapors.

 

it all sounds right, now I just have to figure out how it all goes together, thanks for the help
