Default Automatic Transmission question (dealer said the starter clutch was going out)

So Im new here so bare with me here. My girlfriends son just bought a 2000 civic 1.6 SOC. There is a studder/shake when you accelerate, we took it in to the dealer to have them take a look at it, and they guy started talking about the "starter clutch" going out. I have a chilton manual and i cant find any info in there and I have spent the last 3 hours searching the web and cant find any info pertaining to this item.

Please help.

Personally, I've never heard of a starter clutch... sounds fishy to me.

Heres a little more info on the problem, if i start nice a slow there is no issue, but if I accelerate at normal speed then it studders a little (almost feels like the tires break loose) and the car shakes. I can slow down to almost a complete stop, but as long as i dont actualy stop i can accelerate at any speed and it does not happen.

yeah a starter doesnt have a clutch, it works off of centrifical force to make the starter teeth catch the flywheel and you know the rest.

sounds like maybe the tranny is slipping but that usually happens during any acceleration.

have you checked the tranny? if it is low it could possibly cause a problem. you might change the filter and fluid and see if that helps any.

Its not the starter that im asking about. I know starters dont have a clutch. He said it was the "starting clutch" in the automatic transmission that was going out. But I have never heard of that before.

Still, never heard of a starting clutch, even within the auto tranny.

Any CEL codes? Is the D4 light in the cluster blinking?

Have you checked the axles and motor mounts?
