i just bought a 88 civic hatch and i took it to get somged and it passes everything except the timming part he said it was 18 degrees btdc he suggested the pully had spun what do you guys think?the car only has 147xxx and iam the 3rd owner its all stock and un-raped i highly doubt the car was driven hard at all. thanx!

You can confirm the pulley is correct by removing spark plug #1 and lower a suitable metal rod into the cylinder to probe the top of the piston. Rotate the crank by hand until the rod comes up as high as it will go, this is TDC. Then check that the pointer points to the single notch on the pulley.

The ECU test jumper must be in place to check / adjust the timing. But I assume they did that.

when i got it home i noticed some scrach marks on the distributor so i moved it so they lined up and checked the timing with my light and the marks line up perfect now but my idiel seems higher now....but i havent checked to see if its tdc yet

iam gonna put it at tdc in the A.M. should i be able to see the mark on the pully???? i know V8's....... this is my 1ST honda i see the marks on the block and they are lined up but now i smell gas out of the tail pipe ....smells like its running rich.....sooo was the guy right about a spun pulley??? guess i'll pull her off in the A.M. and find out
