A/C
Does anybody know anything about A/C's ? Mine quit the other day, and I finally got a gauge to test to see if I had any coolant in the system, and it turns out it was over charged. Any idea what could have happened? I'm not hearing the compressor cycle on and off, but I know that it's only supposed to do that when the system is low, to keep from burning up the compressor. The thing is , I'm not sure if the compressor is coming on at all. Any ideas as to what is happening here would be greatly appreciated.
Most of my A/C experience is on GM systems, but they are all pretty similiar.
What makes you think it's overcharged? Did you connect a set of gauges to the "high" AND "low" sides? If compressor is not running, the high and low sides will read the same. The press will be close to the outside temp due to the freons' temp/press relationship (unless is really really low on charge). If the inside of the compressor pulley is turning, the compressor is running. This might be a little difficult to see since it's waay down in there.
The pressure switch on the dryer can be jumped to fool the system into believing freon press is OK. The compressor should come on if the interior controls are set to run the A/C.
Don't leave the switch jumpered. You can kill the compressor running it low on freon/oil.

i bought a bottle of r-134 w/ gauge attached in the hose. thinking the freon was low, so when i hooked it up to the line it would tell me if i was low in gas or not, but the gauge read that i was high. so now im really confused...

i see the price for the belt isnt that bad, but it says that it runs the compressor AND the idler...any idea what that is? and is it going to hurt my car not to have it?

never mind again....another noob post...i got it...
damn what a day. got my belt put on today. My friend said he would do it for like $20. so i get the civic over to him and during taking the other stuff in the way. we break the motor mount(the one that the compressor belt has to go around). [:@] so in short. a $30 job ended up costing me $85. I went ahead and replaced the alternator belt too while we were in there. so i got $40 in the motor mount, $15 in the belt, and i ended givin' him $30 instead of $20 b/c it was more work then we thought. and to top it all off, i still don't have a cold a/c...
