it doesnt sound like a belt or pulley is going out....and i dont notice vtec kicking in at all

i dont have a service manual to recognize the codes if thats what i need

if it was the timing belt wouldnt it run pretty rough depending on the condition of it?

It's possible that the timing belt is rubbing on something without throwing the mechanical timing off.

thats possible, one guy i talked to said it was the cam is going bad but i dont believe that...

i will remove the valve cover and timing cover and see if everything is normal after checking the codes...

if you are a good mechanic get a feeler gauge while you have valve cover off and check the valve clearance.

Start by checking/adjusting the valve clearance like the others said. You can rule out the alternator, A/C etc. by running the engine with the belts removed.

VTEC will be disabled because the CEL is on for any reason.
