Question Can the gas caps go bad?

I have an '06 civic ex and the message "Check Fuel Cap" comes up on my dash. Is it possiable for it to go bad? Should I not worry about it?

Your gas cap is probably not seated correctly - remove and reinstall. Also check the cap for damage where it seals. Most gas caps last far longer than 5 years, however.

on my '98, I have to turn it until it clicks at least 3 times for it to be considered tightly closed. Check your owner's manual to see if something similar applies.

That's a little early but yes, they do go bad. In CA they actually test your gas cap when you get a smog test.

I remember being tested in both IL and MO and they test the gas cap as well to make sure that it creates a vacuum.
