Default cat, engein, radiator

figured i would post both in one topic to save server space haha

1. My check engein light came on comming back from school, i took it to a shop and they plugged something in under my fuse box and it said my cat converter is bad, he said i can still drive it and since my county dosent have emissions, i can just forget about it and it wont do no damage but it will cause me to loose some power. i noticed my car dosent want to go fast at all, i have to floor it just to keep speed going up a hill, is this normal with cat problomes? Also i do plan on replacing it because i dont like the power loss nor do i like ruining the atmosphere so what would be the best cat to get to give me the most power, im running a stock non vtec engein in my 97 honda civic hatch. what should i do? what would i all need? and what should i say when i take it to the shop to get installed? (I know nothing about engeins, i just like to go fast)

2. As i said, my engein is stock, its not a vtec, what can i do to get more power to make it go faster? I want my car to be reliable for years to come, i like the good gas milage i get, but i want my car to have more power, i really dont want to do an engein swap, and im kinda stuck because i have about 200 bucks to spend every two weeks on upgrading my car but i dont know what to do, what are some of your recomendations to help me get alot more speed and power. i heard bolt on turbos will blow up a stock engein, i plan on getting an intake, but what else can i do to get more power

3. when i bought the car, we seen stem under it, he told me it was my radiator n it had a pinhole, someone else said it was the waterpump, i figured i would get an aftermarket radiator instead of one out of the junk yard if it would help me with engein, so the question is, would an aftermarket radiator be better than stock? would it give me any better speed, performance, ect

4. i want to lower my suspension to give me better handeling, but i was told that you need to do alot of other mods so it dont wear out your tires unevenly, what would i need to do?

5. what mods do you reccomend i do to my 97 civic hatch, i got over a grand invested in the stereo and thats all i got done so far, what should i do?

thanks! let me know your opinions on any of my questions! i really appriciate it

just letting you know, in your sig it's "flies," not "fly's"

1. yes, that is the likely culprit. you should just convert the exhaust to EX and buy a magnaflow high flow cat.

2. "it's not a vtec"?... you mean "it doesn't have vtec" or "it's not a vtec engine."
"it's not a vtec" doesn't make sense.

a turbo setup will not blow up the engine as long as your engine has good compression, you don't go past your engine's stock internals' limits, and you get a good tune.
i think you should do a mini-me swap. (d16z6 or d16y8 head on your d16y7 block).

3. you won't notice a difference with a performance radiator. if you were putting out a lot of power you might notice that it cools better, but you won't notice a difference. I would get an aluminum one though just because they are stronger and you don't have to worry about tightening the hose clamps too tight.

4. if you have your toe set to specs by getting an alignment, you shouldn't have funny tire wear. camber problems are for the most part a myth... it really doesn't matter unless you have MAJOR camber. You do need aftermarket shocks though, the stock ones will blow out from the drop.

5. exhaust (not a fart can!), turbo and a mini-me swap

Ok, first, take an english class, now that we have gotten that out of the way lets hit the real issues:

1. Just get a new cat you can get an oem one or an aftermarket high flow one, this will result in an increase of power if you get a high flow one. Was going to say its a relatively easy install but since you are looking at performance mods i would say just do a full ex exhaust conversion. info can be found on this here https://www.hondacivicforum.com/foru...ad.php?t=73237

2. you can turbo your stock engine, its the tune that will prevent the blowing up, look into the book Maximum Boost by Corky Bell, this will tell you all you need to know. but for now look at this https://www.hondacivicforum.com/foru...ad.php?t=68360

3. pretty sure that upgrading your radiator at this point wont really do much for you because you arent experiencing extreme heat.

4. https://www.hondacivicforum.com/foru...ad.php?t=49092 that is all

5. ex exhaust conversion and turbo it.

you'll gain around 25hp at the crank

you can't do it piece by piece

you know the comment box has spell check right?
You want a fast car for cheap? buy a car that goes fast when its stock. Its more expensive to buy a base car and turn it into a race car. If you mod, it'll wear out faster and you will never get the money back in resale. You could put 10g into your civic and maybe sell it for 1G more than book listing.
They are fun though :P

ok spelling is beyond the point, im not asking for smart *** opinions, im asking for opinions that can help me, all i want to know is some mods that will help me get more power, i have a civic, im willing to invest thousands into but i can only go 200 per 2 weeks, heres what im doing in order

1. convert to ex
2. look into mini-me swap (how much does the best of the best mini-me swap run? something that will give me the most power?, im looking in the 1000 price range if possible)
3. cold air intake
4. suspension
5. brake system (aftermarket)

i want to have good power but its not worth it if i dont have good braking and handleing, like i said im a noob, i just want to know whats the best stuff to get, i was looking at those megan headers n people were talkin crap cause they only give 7hp when greddy (spelling??) gives up to 35 or something, idk, i just want opinions on what i can do to make my car better in any way, please dont leave smart *** comments

That's a bunch of BS.

All name brand headers give around the same gains, which with a stock Honda engine is normally like 2-3 WHP or even less. The only header that is truly superior to the rest is the Bisimoto header.

The easiest mini-me swap on your car will be to use the D16Y8 head, an ECU conversion harness, and a P28 ECU. You don't have to do the P28 ECU and conversion harness, you can just get a D16Y8 ECU, but the P28 is better for any future mods such as turbo or anything because it is OBD1.

If all you can get is a D16Z6 head you will make pretty much the same power but wiring up the distributor will require a conversion harness or some custom hardwiring. You'll also need the conversion harness and a P28 ECU.

Use a D16Y8 head gasket either way, they are metal, as opposed to the D16Z6's weaker head gasket. Or if you really want the best, get a cometic head gasket. I'm not sure what the benefits of using one are though. I'd also get ARP head studs while you're at it because you'd have to buy new OEM head studs anyway (they're not reusable). The ARP head studs, however, ARE reusable so they're a good investment. Also, if you turbo down the road, you won't have problems with head lift.

Get your exhaust/cat taken care of, sounds like your cat is clogged.

It can potentially burn up your exhaust valves.
