Check Engine Light???!!
Ok guys...i found another 2000 Civic Si..with only a CAI, short shifter, and some nice seats, the rest is stock.....but my question is.....the guy says that "he had to cut the exhaust off to install the short shifter, and this causes less back pressure which causes the check engine light to come on".....That is pretty much what he told me, now i dont know that much about exhaust and that, so does this sound like a legit statement.(he said he cut it right after the cat i think) Would cutting the exhaust be nessecary to install a shortshifter? and would it cause the check engine light to come on?
Thanks guys....i just wanna make sure i dont make any mistakes buying a car...im 16 and just learning about the 4 bangers....lol

it sounds kinda wired someone cutting the exhaust of for a short shifter then again i never worked on a 2000. cuttin it off shouldnt throw a code? take it to the local autozone and have the code read for free it might be just a o2 code no biggey
My buddy does exhaust work all the time and he said it could be the o2 sensor or w/e....but its a 2 hour drive to the place where the car is.....so i dno how possible it is for me to take it to an autozone..lol...but i think my buddy that does the exhaust work is going with me so he can have a look....and with the advice i get from u guys...im sure ill have it figured out pretty soon...lol...thanks
ok just so u know backpressure has nothing to do with the o2, i had a 00 si with 2.5 straight pipe and never hit a check engine light.... so my guess is pull the code and itll probably say ur o2 is bad, so make sure its plugged in and still there because it might have a home made exhaust and they by-passed it.... good luck....
If the o2 sensor is bad....which it is really beggining to sound that way.....would it be bad, or impossible to drive the car home(keep in mind its a 1 hour and 45 minute drive)?
cutting the exhaust off isnt necesarry, but i guess it would make install alot easier lol but definitely not necesarry. and you mean, that after the cat there is no exhaust piping? Thats kinda ridiculous and prolly really loud and annoying, but fixable. I dont think it would cause a CEL though, but heres the DIY so you can cehck it yourself: https://www.hondacivicforum.com/m_152006/tm.htm
thanks, if i do get the car i will just get a whole new exhaust, but thats a whole different topic.........sorry for being a complete newb....and i tried searching for a picture diagram or an explanation of what an o2 sensor is and what it looks like and where its located......can anyone help me out there to?
i have learned so much stuff on this site in the past 2 weeks its crazy...i have just been searching random topics and reading everything i can about things....you guys a a lot of help

on any 96 and newer car such as the one in question, you have two o2 snesors, one in your exhast manifold before the catalytic converter and then one after the cat. They detect how your a/f mixture is doing and how well your cat is working. They are screwed into threaded holes called "bungs". They are then connected to your ECU and if they detect something is wrong, they will throw a CEL, then you can use the DIY to see what is wrong. The sensors are just one of many things that can throw CELs though, although they are a fairly common one to have.
As for the exhaust, if its just taken off after the cat, you can buy a catback exhaust that will bolt right up to the cat and you should be all set. GReddy, Apexi, Megan, Magnaflow and RSR all make quality catback exhaust systems, for more info on them check the Header, Intake and Exhaust section here on HCF.
