Hello, I am looking for any information regarding a complete a/c install for my `95 DX 5-speed coupe. It has 160+K miles on its stock engine, has never had any major problems, and still runs great. This is my 6th summer here in blazing hot Phoenix, Arizona and I just can`t deal with not having a/c anymore, but I can`t afford to get another car at the moment unlessadding a/ccosts too much to make it worth it! Besides.. I`m its original owner and I love this car!

Here are my questions:
[ol][*]What price range would a job like this fall into? I would prefer Honda specialists, or AAA certified, if that helps narrow the range.[*]Are there any caveats, or hidden issues I should be aware of?[*]Are parts for this job easily available? I would prefer OEM parts, of course, but will consider aftermarket if it`s easier, or cheaper.[*]Considering the age of the engine, would adding an a/c systemput undue stress on it?Should a noticable drop in powerbe expected?[*]How long would a job like this normally take?[*]What exactly is involved with a complete a/c install?[/ol]

well ive never done this myself. But i can tell you that yes you will feel the car bog down a little when you have the ac on

 

Start by taking a look at the A/C system chapter in the 92-95 Civic service manual found at the link in my signature. As a possible way to save money, you may be able to pull an A/C system out of a 5th generation Civic at a salvage yard.

also, on hondaautomotiveparts.com, you can buy the A/C kit for your car. (It's under "kit", once you go put in your car's info) It's like $450. You can install it yourself if you are somewhat familiar with your car. It's going to cost you ALOT more to get the dealer to do it. Just install it and then take it to a shop to get freon put in. Don't turn it on without the freon in it.

There are two kits on hondaautomotiveparts.com for my model, but one is $570 and the other is $826. I'll need to call them and figure out what the difference is since there is no specific description beyond "Air Conditioning Assy." I will also start calling around to get some estimates on install. I can do this if it comes in under $1200 for parts + labor.

Unfortunately the '91 parts will not fit a '95. Pretty much every part is completely different. Strip a 92 to 95 parts car or buy the kit from a dealer. There is a really good A/C shop in Phoenix that has a presence on the web.

The install labor is only 2 or 3 hours. Back then the cars didn't come with A/C from the factory. Instead the dealer would bolt a kit on before selling the car, so it is designed for quick installation.

 

yea, and you also can use the complete A/C system off of a 93-95 Del Sol as long as it doesn't have the B16 DOHC engine in it. You can use the A/C out of the "S" or "Si" models.


EDIT: and i'm not sure of this but don't EK civics use the same A/C system also? If that's the case then you can also use 96-00 Civic A/C and 96-97 Del Sol A/C

 

Check ebay for some parts too. I got a good used compressor for 30$ of there. And like they said, junkyards will save you a lot. I know if you have a Pull-a-Part near you, its only like 86$ for the whole kit. Installation around my area was going to run around 400 or so.

 

does anyone have the installation instruction for the 91 civic. i wanted to remove everything but i may have missed something. the instruction will help me decifer what i may have missed.
