crank pulley bolt removal
I have a 90 civic that I can't get the pulley bolt off of. The factory manual calls it
a "special" bolt, but doesn't say why. Is it left handed thread? It also says to turn the engine counter clock wise to set top dead center, and if the bolt comes loose to re torque. So I assume that it is normal threads. And it is an automatic so the engine keeps turning over, no way to get good action on the bolt. Thanks Dave |
put it in gear and wedge a pry bar between the wheel studs and the floor. it can take a lot of force to remove it. normal threads, don't lose the little metal pin.

It's right hand thread. The best way is to use an impact wrench. The engine will not spin because of inertia.
Turning the bolt by hand (with a long lever), the engine will turn. On an automatic you can try to stop the engine from turning by removing the starter and jamming the flywheel. Some crank pulleys have a hexagonal recess that accepts a special pulley holder tool. |
I've always got them off by putting it in 5 th with the wheels on the ground makes the engine harder to turn
