Creaking noise on hard turns

97 Civic EX sedan AT.

When I turn hard to the right or left I get a creaking noise, kind of like an old coffin opening.
It seems to be coming from the drivers side suspension area. Doesn't seem to do it unless the car is moving. I looked underneath while someone turned the wheel and it didn't make the noise.

Any ideas? Someone mentioned might be wheel bearings, someone else said maybe control arm bushings.

my car does the same thing. thought it was maybe the bushins or mybe tie rod ends...haven't figured it out yet. after we had a pretty bad rain here a couple of months ago it stopped doing it, but then it started up again recently, only not as bad this time.

Mine got worse after I went thru some big puddles in the road.
I'm going to jack my car up later today and take a look. I'll post if I find something.

Sounds like a potential power steering issue. Is the fluid low?

Alternatively, when you jack up the front end, inspect the CV boots on the axles. If torn and leaking, the axles may need to be replaced.

I have an 01 civic ex and mine does the smae thing. i had it checked though and they said that it was just normal. Kind of hard to believe though, because as RonJ says, it sounds and feelslike a power steering issue.
Let me know what you find out.

Same problem here...My PS was disconnected for a while by it's previous owner, and I don't think the fluid was was connected. May be PS related...

How low was the PS fluid level? If it was very low, then you may need to bleed the system by turning the wheels lock to lock several times. Afterwards, recheck fluid level and top off if necessary. You should also determine whether your PS system has developed a serious leak. By the way, use of anything but Honda PS fluid can damage the system.

I did turn the wheel lock to lock a few times. Unfortunately I used generic power steering fluid.
