DIY Timing Belt Install
 

I have a 2001 Civic DX-G, I was thinking about changing the belt and water pump myself. I have plenty of experience working on cars, I am a former autobody repairman. I have a Haynes manual for this car and after reading the general procedure I'm thinking I'd be able to tackle this job myself. I'd change the cam and crank seals along with the other belts for the power steering, ac, and alternator. How long does such a job usually take for the backyard mechanic? Thanks, Brian.

This is just a guess, but if I go ahead and put it someone that knows will correct me and you will get your answer. LOL

I would say about six hours tops?!?!?!?!

Provided you have all the tools, enough space to work, and maybe a friend to help you with a few odds and ends you could do it in a night. I would definitely give yourself a couple days though, you never know what you're going to run into during a swap

^^^yeah, give yourself at least 2 days. I broke two extension sockets when trying to take out the cam pulley bolt off[&:], good thing craftsman has life time warranty:D

Having an impact wrench for the crank bolt and motor mounts makes the job a lot easier. If you're doing this outside be very careful as you take the crank pulley off, not to lose the tiny metal key.

I would not mess with the oil seals unless they're leaking. It's easy to damage the new seals while putting them in and then have them leak and have to do the whole thing over again.
