Default Drivetrain whine

2006 Civic EX. Vehicle has a manual transmission. While cruising at any speed, or in any gear (not while accelerating or decelerating), I hear a 'whine' that sounds like a typical rear end whine on a rear-wheel drive car when its rear end has become worn out. I've never heard of this kind of sound happening to a front wheel drive vehicle before. I cannot determine the origin of the whine. What would you suggest I check/have checked? Thank you.

First check that the transmission is full of fluid. It doesn't have a dipstick, you need to unscrew the fill plug from the side.

That was the first thing I checked. It looks good. Thanks for your response mk378.
