Drum - Disc Brakes

So... My 1987 CRX has Drum breaks. and I live in a redneck part of the world and many of my friends older trucks have drum breaks and i had the unfortunate oppurtunity to be in one of my closer friends truck as his drum brakes failed. (giving me massive paranoia about them). How much would it cost and how much labor would it be to change to Disc breaks. and if i do will i be able to equip it with ABS?

RE: Drum - Disc Brakes

if something in the hydralic system fails, its not going to make any difference if it is a drum or disc brake.
or did one of the springs in the drum fail ??

RE: Drum - Disc Brakes

I wouldn't be too paranoid, the rear brakes only do about 30% of your braking, the front discs handle the other 70%. Like fglaustin says, if your brake lines are weak it makes no difference what kind of brakes you have. If you want peace of mind, replace your drums, shoes and springs. The parts will be between $80-100 you should be set for another 100,000 miles.
