Default Emission question...

I don't know how many of you are aware of emission tests because of where you are located... but if you do know...I have failed mine badly... My HC is supposed to be at .8 and i was running at 3.59... My CO supposed to be at 15.00 i was running 93.50. Does anybody know what problem could cause this? I just changed my air filter, Spark plugs and distributor cap and i am going to try to take it to a shop tommorrow b ut i was wondering if any body knew. Also i found a thing at AdvanceAutoparts.com called a Ignition Fuel Vapor Canister..Does that have anything to do with emissions? Thanks

If your car is OBDII, you would for sure have a check engine light if the cat was blown. If you havent' changed air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor in a while I would go ahead and do that. That could be causing the problem but those are all items that need to be changed periodically anyway. For the O2 sensor, try to get a scan tool that can look at live sensor data. Look at the primary O2 sensor. The primary O2 sensor controls the A/F ratio so if this is not working properly then your A/F will not be correct and this could lead emissions problems. Also check your PCV valve and EGR valve. EGR valve is pretty easy to check. At idle, push the diaphragm of the EGR valve. This will allow exhaust into the intake. Your engien should start to run rough. This means that it is working. For the PCV, pull the valve out and shake it. If you hear a rattle, then it is fine.
