Default Engine Burning lots of oil

Aight..so the ZC is running and burning oil really bad....

Lots of smoke out the tail pipe....

I replaced the PCV valve today hoping that might solve the problem since my old one didn't work, but it seems to be burning more oil...

when i bought the engine the guy said it has new rings, rods, and bearings...and i have been told by several people that it will burn oil until the rings seat...anyone wanna back that up?

The oil is dirty so I am gunna change it tomorrow..i found this on the internet and not sure if its legit or not but i figured i would try it...

If the rings were just installed, take it easy on the engine for a while. You want to make sure they seat properly. I would start by running a compression test. Somehow oil is ending up in the cylinders. It can be leaking from the head gasket, but then you would have oil and coolant mixing as well (compression test will confirm/deny this). It could be the piston rings. It could also be the valve seals. There is oil everywhere inside your cylinder head to keep the valvetrain lubricated. Valve seals make sure that oil does not drip down the valves and into the cylinders when the valves open. If your valve seals are shot, then oil might be getting in from the valves.

alright...ill try to get a compression check going....it might be valve seals..i know i didn't replace those before the engine was put in and I really don't trust the guy who sold it to me since he put the wrong crank gear on it...

Valves seals are a pain to install. First you have to take the cylinder heads off. Then you have to take the rockers out. Then you have to take the springs out. Then you can replace the valve seals. Then you have to put everything back together. See my thread in Engine and Internals about valve seals.

well..ive been doing a bunch of reading on the internet..cause i wan't this to stop cause its anoying, costly, and embarassing to have a cloud of smoke behind you where ever you go.

I read that if you have smoke one deceleration its more likley valve seals and on accelleration it is probably rings...

well i have no smoke on deceleration so, im not rulling out valve seals, but im gunna hope its just the rings seating....I JUST WANT A WORKING CAR!

A dry/wet compression test(dry first) will tell you if you have bad pistons rings. If your valves were not closing properly, you have other probles as well. The cylinders wouldn't hold compression as when the piston compresses the air and fuel it would be pushed back through the valves.

Do a cylinder leak down test. That might tell you where **** is leaking from

im leaning towards my head gasket now....i might have got a bad one/installed it poorly/autozone ripped me off...somthing along the lines of there..

compression test will point me in the right dirrection right?

Do a dry compression test and then a wet compression test. The results should be about the same for the wet and dry. The results should be within 10% between the cylinders. If you fail the dry compression test, the head will have to come off to see what is going on. If it fails a wet compression test, I would lean towards rings.

allright..ill try to get a compression tester...i bought one but then i hooked the guage up to my potato gun and it kinda broke....so maybe my gf's dad has one i can barrow..

on another note..that potoato gun is tight..my friend and i made it for his war movie..soposed to simulate granades

you can see it in the background..our next one is gunna have a 2" valve and 3 chambers, one with oxygen accelerant that we are gunna ingnight...
