Fault codes 54, 61 & Emmissions problem.
My last post was about the yellow engine light stays on whilst driving due to a fault with the oxygen sensor heater circuit. I bought a new oxygen sensor from a honda dealer, it's a denso. The light is still on even after re-setting the ecu.
Today I took it for an emmisions check assuming it would pass, as earlier this month i was led to beleive it needed genuine lambda sensor from honda! Anyway, it failed on emmisions and now i'm told my distributor is from another honda car, the plug has been soldered on and taped with insulation tape. How will this effect the high emmisions??? The car starts ok and drives ok. Codes 54 and 61 have come from the diagnostic, I retreived a code 41 before. any ideas? should i bother buying a new distributor beleiving it will solve the emmisions fault? The car is a 1996 Civic SR Auto 1.6i, engine D16 Y8

RE: Fault codes 54, 61 & Emmissions problem.
Code 54 is a problem with the CKF sensor.
Code 61 is a problem with the primary O2 sensor (before the catalytic converter).
Reset the ECU and verify these same CEL codes are thrown. If so, the sensors likely need to be replaced. It's also possible that the problems are with the sensor circuits.

not sure if this covers your car or not
but I took my 1996 civic ex sedan in for a timing belt change and oil leak problem - car has 101,000 miles same motor D16Y8 vtec - had to have my vtec solenoid replaced because of an oil leak.
when I was there the honda service rep said my car was eligible for an emissions warranty program.
they gave me new plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, along with digging any codes out of my ecu to see if they have been tripped - no codes my engine light has never came on and the car has been awesome. anyway they said the emissions warranty for the civic is extended to 15 years and 150,000 miles.
well I thought this was awesome - will be keeping the car a little while longer now
anyway I am not sure if your car is under it and I never even knew about the warranty program until I took my car in for the timing belt service. so I don't know anything about it but I guess it is worth a shot. not sure if you car is over 150,000 or not but maybe your car would be covered.
hope this helps.
