Feels really rough shifting while in mortion
When I'm sitting still in the car and shift, it is very smooth. However, when I'm moving and shifting between 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, it feels really rough like matal edges on metal edges. I hear no noise and it still moves into gear easily enough, but it just doesn't feel right.
I purchased this car about 3 weeks ago. It's a 02 civic EX 5 sp.with 98000 mi.
Also, in reverse if the car is moving backwardsit doesn't matter how far I push the clutch down... it just grinds and grinds in the really bad way when I try to put the car into reverse gear. I assume that's not normal.

hmm that sounds like my car, reverse doesnt gind all the time on mine but i have to fish a while to get it in first. I think the shifter assembly is loose, anyone know how to tightenit up? I was told energy suspension bushings but everywhere i go to order them, they laugh at me and say, "wtf, there is no company with that name". also my shifter flops around worse than a fish out of water when in gear. should i go to honda for this or should i try and do it myself?
should the reverse gear go in smoothly when the car is in motion, i believe that it is a diferent kind of gear to the forward gears i think it is called a floating gear, and this kind of gear shouldnt be but it gear when revs are up, or car is in motion
You have to bring the car to a full stop before shifting into reverse or the gears will grind.
If they grind even with the car stopped and the clutch pedal pressed down fully, the clutch is dragging. A little of this is normal and can be worked around by shifting to any forward gear first to stop the transmission input shaft, then quickly move to reverse. If even that doesn't work, the OP seems to have a clutch problem, not the transmission.

yeah mine jumps a bit when i shift into gears but not in any other cars ive driven... and when you try to go into revers stop completely and it will do it fine... i just found that out today
As others have said, "Clear the gate" by ****ing into a forward gear, then to reverse. It shouldn't grind when you do this. Mine does the same thing, and when I do this, everything is fine.
Now that it's been happening for the past few weeks, it appears that the easiest way for me to get over the problem is to be gently. No slamming the shifter into any gear, no matter how much I am trying to get up to speed.
It takes a little longerto ease it in, but she seems to like it much better that way.

if you are rolling backwards and try to put the car in reverse its gonna grind because the gears including reverse are spinning forward. As far as the forward feeling try changing the tranny fluid with either genuine honda tranny manuel fluid or gm syncromesh
I have a similar problem, When my i first start up my car and try to put it in reverse it usually grind like a mother****er, so i gotta sit there pumping the clutch for 5 minutes, and warm up my car, so it idles at like 1k rpm, then i'll try again and it'll be fine. A mechanic told me that it's not a clutch problem, he said my clutch was good, but he said i needed a new slate cylinder, and master cylinder, and change my tranny fluid.
