Fuel, air, spark. You need all three. Which don't you have?

The battery or the starter is probably bad. Start by cleaning and tightening the battery terminals and connectors, as well as the battery ground connection on the engine bay frame. Next charge the battery at a local auto parts store (often free service).

If the battery is fine, then troubleshoot the starter circuit. The winding noise, in fact, may indicate a bad starter motor.

Yes, starter and starter motor are one and the same.

if its the starter.... the starter is 2 parts.... the main spin motor and the solinoid that pops the gear out to engage the flywheel... it could be one problem... easy way to test it is to pull it off and have it tested out at autozone or else where...

but theres so many things that could be the problem.... its almost imposible to diagnos without actualy seeing it in person....
everyone on this forum could tell you one posible problem that it might be.LOL
sometimes its just better to have it towed to a respectable shop...

Come on, addiction. Give the guy a chance to figure it out himself. I loathe the thought of taking a car to the shop. With some patience and logic, this type of basic problem can be figured out at home.
