Fuel gauge max all the time - Tried tests in Helms manual
Hi,
The fuel gauge in my Civic is stuck at maximum (full tank) all the time.
I've worked through the diagnostics in the Helms manual (Section 23-143 / Page 1083) and here's what I've found:
- 12 volts over the BLK/WHT and YEL/WHT terminals of the 3-P connector. According to the manual this should be between 5 and 8 volts.
- If I move the needle to empty by hand and then short the BLK/WHT and YEL/WHT terminals, the gauge creeps back up to maximum.
- Resistance between the B and C terminals of the fuel level sender unit is 29.5 ohms for a half tank - normal according to the manual.
It seems the gauge and sender unit are working fine, so what could be the problem? If the voltage is not as specified (which it isn't, quite) the manual suggests to check for "an open in the YEL, YEL/WHT or BLK wire" or a "poor ground (G551, G552)" - could either of these be causing it? If so, how do I test and fix?
Many thanks in advance - this is driving me nuts!
