Fuel pump/relay test question....

I'm helping my friend with his '02 Civic w/ 170k miles. Searched here for relay and pump details. Thanks all. We can hear the relay cycle but the pump does not run. CEL remains on until cranking, then goes off. We have not checked voltage at the pump yet. He's setting that up for me later. My question is can I simply check for 12 volts at the pump during that 2 second key-on time and if the pump doesn't run, that's it? To put it another way, can you get a false 12 volts because of no load and have a bad relay and good pump? I'm thinking toasty contacts could transmit voltage but not fire the pump. I don't want this kid with no $ to buy a pump he doesn't need. Thanks, C.

I'm pretty sure the CEL should cycle on and off if you turn the key on and don't crank. Not positive about that on the 2001 + though. If you see 12 volts going to the pump and it doesn't run, pump is bad. Check the wiring around the gas tank including the ground before finally condemning the pump. Bad relay (which is rare to happen in models after 1995) would supply no volts to the pump.

'02 Civic LX. With the glove box flipped down, not sure where the PGM-FI relay is. What are the three (blue, brown and black) right behind the glove box? The one on the left does the 2 second cycle. Thanks, C.

It's going to be the one on the left. I'd just cut to the chase and start with test #18, if that comes up zero then go back to the relay and do the other tests to find out why power is not coming back to the tank. Most likely though, the pump is bad.

Thanks. I'll revisit it tonight. I couldn't get that relay out. How do you release them? C.

"We" appear to have an open wire from the relay to the pump; good test light on the yellow w/green at the relay but nothing at the tank. Also tried to jump yellow/blk and yellow/grn but no pump. Please confirm for me because it's not clear from the picture above. There's three relays right behind the glove box hinge ('02 Civic LX). The one on the left does the 2 second cycle at key-on. That relay has a yellow/grn like at the tank.

Am I on the correct relay?

Also, how in the H E double hockey sticks do you get those relays out of their sockets??? Thanks, C.

Post some clear pictures.

Is he the original owner of the car? Previous owner may have installed a "kill switch" somewhere along the yellow/green wire to cut off the fuel pump and deter theft.
