Default Gurgling Sound - transmission

Hi All,

I have a 2017 Honda Civic sedan with ~150k miles on it that has been diagnosed with a transmission issue by my mechanic and one of the local dealerships.

What's odd is the dash warning light has not popped up to indicate an issue. The car makes a gurgling / whomping sound at speeds above 5mph (in reverse as well). It gets louder as I get going faster. It makes no sound when foot is on gas in neutral. I've attached a short recording of me driving around to give an example of the sound that my civic is making. The sound begins ~16 seconds in.

Both the mechanic and dealership recommended a transmission replacement. I haven't done anything to the car yet (except stopped driving it) because it's the replacement quote was a higher price tag than what's left on the loan and I want to get more opinions before I make a decision.

In addition (but anecdotally) I've heard the mechanics have an incentive to recommend a full transmission replacement when it may be unnecessary. I have 0 background in the world of auto transmissions so I have no idea how complex/simple the task could be.

I'm curious if anyone has ever come across this issue/sound before and what they may recommend. Would getting a full transmission flush be a potential last ditch solution?

Let me know if I need to provide any more background information etc.

Thank you all for your time,
17civic
