Default Having power problems.

Its a 99 prelude. Lately the clutch has been going out every other day and I would have to put more brake fluid in. It keeps leaking or something. Now today it was acting weird. It was like an automatic driving on the freeway. You know where it cruises at say 2500 rpm going 60 but as soon as you gas it hard it will jump to like 5000 or something instead of how a manual is where it will just stay at a high rpm cruising. Well it was doing that in 3rd and 4th gears. Cruisng it would be fine at 2500 rpm till I hit the gas hard the rpm shot to 6000 with little to no acceleration. I tried it just in 2nd on flat road and it seemed fine but 3rd gear and up was having problems. I was going up the hill at my house and then 2nd gear was having problems it would have to rev high and I was going nowhere and the car started shaking. I hope that maybe its just the clutch and its just not engaging properly.

For the clutch fluid leak, check the clutch master and slave cylinders. Replace the leaking component and then bleed the system.

Regarding the clutch slipping, I think this is a separate problem and that the clutch needs to be replaced. How many miles on the car?

This slipping problem happened to my old civic, the rear main seal started leaking and getting oil all over the clutch. I got the clutch and the rear main seal replaced and everything was fine again.

There's a remote chance the master cylinder is not engaging the clutch fully, and causing it to slip. Most likely though your clutch disk is shot, in addition to the hydraulic problem. Look for brake fluid leaking out either under the boot on the slave cylinder, or up inside the car at the top of the clutch pedal from the master cylinder. Could also be a contamination issue. Putting anything other than DOT3 brake fluid in there will ruin everything.

The clutch started going out after my bro bought just regular brake fluid. I had to fill it up every week cause it would be gone and the clutch would just sink. Do you have to use a certain type of fluid?
