Headlights flashing on and off

Bought a 1998 Honda Civic DX hatchback in 2007. It's been a great car! Until recently the headlights would turn on automatically when starting the engine. Now they do not. Instead the headlights flash on and off for a short while driving. You can hear the mechanism clicking under the dash somewhere. There doesn't seem to be any other electrical problems other than the rear window wiper stopped working about a year ago (yes I checked the fuses). Alternator was replaced about 2 years ago. Car starts, runs and drives perfectly except for the headlight issue.

There must be some aftermarket wiring, because in stock condition the headlights are not designed to come on automatically when starting the engine. Unless its a Canadian model with DRL.

Is it a Honda Alarm or aftermarket one?

I was told when I bought the car that it's a factory alarm. Requires double click on ignition switch to disengage. Didn't come with fancy key chain clicker.

I believe the original owner purchased this car new in Vancouver, BC.

The DRL model is known for problems with the DRL controller, which I think is mounted behind the dash near the glove compartment. It can be "rebuilt" by removing it from the car, open the box, and resolder all the conections on the circuit board like you would do a main relay.

Also I think you can just disconnect it and then the lights will be controlled strictly by the light switch like the USA model.

Thanks a lot for your help! I found the DRL box by removing the glove compartment and sure enough that's where the clicking is coming from. Mystery solved!
