Help! 98 DX not starting, just hear click
 

I came back from vacation and now my car won't start. No power, no spark. All I hear is a "click" when i turn the key. Anyone know what could be the problem?

i would start off by charging the battery,you could also have a bad soleniod

I attached one of those portable battery charging packs... but nothing happened.

There was also some smoke coming from the battery area?

Jump-starting from another car is a lot better than those little batteries. With the other car running, it will actually charge the battery in your car. The other option is a battery charger that plugs into house current, allow it to charge for a few hours then try to start.

The smoke probably means a bad connection at one of the battery terminals. Remove the terminals and clean the contact surfaces then reconnect securely. Loosen the nut fully and make sure the terminal is all the way down on the battery, you should have some of the battery post sticking out through the top of the terminal.
