Help with 98 Honda civic check engine light

My girlfriend just got a 98 Honda civic lx automatic. It has been riding real rough and finally last night the check engine light came on and then started flashing. She brought it to a local auto parts place and they read the check engine light (sorry I don't know much about cars) and the guy said it read 2 and 4. So what does that mean the problem could be? Thanks a lot for any help

Wrong code.. they probably give you a generic code starts with P0*** (P zero, etc.. )

Flashing CEL means that misfiring has been detected. Of course you already know that since it was misfiring noticeably. Check if there are any other codes besides misfire. If it's misfiring mostly when you press hard on the gas pedal and the engine rpm is low, that is usually weak sparks. Replace the spark plugs, spark wires, distributor cap and rotor. Those parts need periodic replacement anyway.
