Honda Civic 1993 Check Engine
Hello everyone, I recently bought a manual 1993 Honda Civic 4-door from a friend. I am not able to tell whether it is an LX, DX, or EX because it no longer has the emblem in the back. I am having a problem with the car because it has the check engine light on and it never goes away. In addition, when I start the car the engine starts reving by itself and the rpm bar goes up to 4000 or higher. What could be wrong with the car?

Check that the throttle cable goes slack when no one is pressing the gas pedal. Check that all hoses are hooked up. Do the power brakes work? (Start engine, press brake pedal a few times note how it feels. Then stop engine, press brakes again-- after 2 or 3 times the power assist should go away and they get hard to press.) If the power brake booster is shot, it can be a huge vacuum leak. Bottom line is that something is letting too much air into the engine at idle, that's the only way it can rev that high.
