Default identifing bad fuel pump - and does it matter what brand?

i recently bought an 89 civic, the seller said the engine had been rebuilt, just needed a new fuel pump but some other people i have talked to insist that couldn't be the pump so i figured i would ask and get some opinions on that and also wondering if it matters what brand or where it comes from

when you turn the key into the on position there is no sound from the fuel pump, usually after sitting overnight the car will crank, lights and everything come on like there should but it wont start on it's own, give a spray or two onto the filter for the air intake though and it will fire up and run. it doesn't seem like it sputters or hesitates, but it's very slow when taking off from stop signs, like it has no power til it hits about 2k or so. it idles solid, 1k it doesn't surge or do anything like that, and it will usually fire up the rest of the day after you get it started in the morning unless it sits for a long period of time.

someone else is saying it shouldn't be running at all if it was the pump and that it'd be the injectors, but the lack of sound from the pump seems like that should be it, or should be replaced anyway, like it works but in a limited amount as to it can supply enough pressure to keep it running but not enough to get it started initially, but that's just my guess and i'm not really mechanically inclined.

we're looking at this for a replacement http://www.jcwhitney.com/FACET-SOLID...2062_10102.jcw
or one off ebay as cost is a factor for us right now.

thanks for any thoughts and sugguestions

there is no humming coming from the fuel pump?? pull the pump out and check it. you can pull the back seat out and access it.
if not then to test the injectors
get a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up then turn key on watch the guage..start the car... turn it off then watch then gauge the pressure shouldnt drop.
if it does then a leaking fuel injector...

To get to the fuel pump in a 91 or before you have to remove the fuel tank. So many people think its under the back seat lol.
