idle and rpms
Hey guys....tonight I noticed on the freeway going 60 the rpms was at 3000. I don't remember it ever getting that high before. And when I put it in neutral it was ideling at 1000 but dropped to just under the 1000 mark after about 20 seconds.
Is this normal?
The car overheated on the freeway a couple weeks ago. And the only thing changed was a fan switch. Can this be the cause for the high rpms and idle?
thanks

RE: idle and rpms
Ok...I just got home after my last post. The idle and the RPMs are back to normal. RPM was around 2000 @ 60mph. Idle around 700 by the time I got home.
Any idea what cased it to act weird last night? [&:]

RE: idle and rpms
Yes the a/c was on, but I turned it off when I noticed it up that high. But it didn't make a difference. Other than when it was idling, and I turned the ac OFF, it actuall reved up alittle then came back down.
I didn't see anything else that would lead me to believe the ac had something to do with it.

RE: idle and rpms
it should rev up slightly when you turn the ac off - ac pump needs a fair bit of the engines power to run it, and when you switch it off, the ecu takes a moment to realise it's off! drive your car with and then without the ac on - see if it makes any difference
it sounds like your temp sensor could have been damaged when the car overheated - if it's giving a cooler reading to the ecu, it'd cause the car to rev up
it could also be a sticky throttle or cable - try putting grease around the lever on the throttle body. also, move it by hand to check for ease of movement
what year/type is your car?
