I'm guessing this is BAD
So I'm under my car (96 civic) trying to familiarize my self with parts in order to swap my clutch and I see this:

I'm hoping that it should be like that, but common sense tells me that the tranny bottomed out somewhere and is now dented.
Someone help me out and tell me how much of a $h!t hole I'm in.....

It looks like it's just cast that way. What engine/trans is this?
How could the engine have even bottomed out there with the exhaust like that??
That tiny nick there is nowhere near large enough to cause any problems on its own. There's no oil in the bellhousing anyway.

That's normal. You're looking at where the engine meets the trans, where the clutch is. The little niche is intentional. It lets any oil that may leak from the engine or transmission shaft seals drip out there. If it didn't have a way out, the clutch would get oil on it and that's not good.
