Default installing exhaust studs

Hi all. I am installing exhaust studs on a cylinder head that I bought from autozone for a 2001 civic. The studs are from Honda and the nuts from the old head screw on easily. However, when I try to screw them into the head, I meet a decent amount of resistance after about 1.5 turns. I am afraid to apply too much torque to them as I don't want to strip the threads am I being too much of a wuss, or could there be something else going on? It seems like they screw on easier on the top two holes rather than the bottom 3.

Are the holes filled with dirt/grime? That might be a cause. Why are you replacing your exhaust studs? Have you check the pitch of the new pieces against the old pieces?

The threads are designed to not be an easy fit. It does take some force to put them in. This is so when you go to remove the manifold, the nut should unscrew off the outside first, instead of the whole stud coming out.

Thanks for the replies, I just put a little more torque on them after reading your threads and they went on pretty well. It was my first time doing that and I was afraid of stripping the threads. So your advice really helped.
