legality question about jdm motors.

I've been reading up on b18c swaps and i read that jdm motors aren't legal in some states. is this true? I am looking at a B18C from a 94-97 gsr. what obd will it be using??? How different will the wiring end up being? will the motor be legal in massachusetts.?

They're only illegal if your state has a statute against a different motor other than what was manufactured for the vehicle to go in it. In which case, who the hell would notice? Also, the swap has to pass your state's emissions standards. Your emissions tech is the only person who's going to know it's not the original motor. In georgia, it doesn't have to be the original motor as long as it passes our standards here.

Usually the deal is you cant put in an engine that is older that what you have in your car.

Never heard of that here in GA. I'm positive that these responses are going to change by state. It's not a federal mandate, so its regulated by state.

Here I'm pretty sure if you have an OBD2 car, you have to get an OBD2 motor, if you have OBD1 you can't get OBD0 and so on... personally, it really doesn't matter, just get your inspection done under the table;)

^^ Thats what I was referring to and I meant to add in there that it's gonna vary by state. hehe I prefer my current situation which is to live where they dont test emissions.:D Then you can do whatever the hell you want to as long as it doesnt piss off the cops.

I've heard that the JDM ECU that comes with the B18c will prevent you from passing or something. A lot of people will use a USDM ECU. I gotta find more about that stuff too cause I'm planning on doing a B18 swap eventually. And I believe the thing about the older engine in a newer car is true in most states, at least thats what my engine swap book says. As long as you dont live in Cali I think you'll be ok, lol.
