Default motor mount issues

When I had my timing belt changed, I was told that I needed a new drivers side lower motor mount. All the rubber was broke on mine.

I'm going to take my car to my old schools shop and do it my self. Anyone else changed one of these lower driver side mounts on a 98 civic ex?

I don't think there's much to it, but what all do I have to do to replace it? Just jack the car up, take the wheel off, jack the motor up?

My other mounts aren't too bad but will be replaced sometime later.

But my concern is this lower driver side broken one. Wouldn't that cause my motor to hop a little when accelerating? Or is that just an effect of the top mounts being worn out?

mine's torn too. i noticed while replacing the a/c compressor. RonJ told me not to worry about it unless I notice increased engine vibration or other problems. I plan on replacing it when I get the chance though. You can find them cheap on ebay

replacing it is very simple, just take out the 2 bolts that are facing upwards then remove the large nut in the center. that mount is a tq mount. if ur current one is very badly torn, u may notice a little less wheel hop with a new one.

The engine does have to be jacked up to be changed it right?

Just curious, how do you describe wheel hop?

In addition, which engine mount is most critical for dampening engine idle vibrations at the steering wheel with and without A/C? Is the rear mount most important or are others just as important? Is a specific engine mount more important for preventing engine movement during acceleration?

Put front engine on jack stands, and then try to remove the old mount and install the new one. During the process, if you suspect the engine must be lifted slightly, do so using a jack on the oil pan. Place a piece of wood between the oil pan and jack to prevent damaging the oil pan.

Yeah and I dont mean to thread jack but I have been havin similar problems. When I accelerate (doesnt have to be hard, even lightly) and then let my foot off the gas the car jerks a little and if the car is in an odd gear (1,3,5) and you hold the shifter while you do this then you can feel it get pulled forward a bit. Do you think its worn motor mounts causin the engine to move and if so which ones would need to be replaced?

Anyone have pics of where all the mounts are located?

Just replace it, take your time and you will learn a lot about your car. Plus, there will be an instructor to help you get it done properly.

Wheel hop
An undesirable suspension characteristic in which a wheel (or several) moves up and down so violently that it actually leaves the ground. Wheel hop can be caused by many problems, including excessive unsprung weight, insufficient shock damping, or poor torsional axle control.

all of the mounts are designed to control and dampen engine movement. there are 2 mounts, the engine torque(the one phillip mentioned) and transmission torque mounts that reduce vibrations, engine movement and controls torque output the motor produces under acceleration. this is why inserts such as the ones Energy Suspension make reduce wheel hope a good amount due to less energy being lost within the mount. like i said, replacing that mount, with an OEM mount, may reduce wheel hop just a little bit.
