MPG question?
93 LX 1.5 L mixed driving nothing worse than 32 mpg. Hwy traveling at 75 to 78 mpg with cruise 34 mpg. Slower hwy driving in the 60 mph and under range 38 - 42 mpg.98 Civic DX HB1.6L 5 speed manual: roughly the same as above thus far - only owned for a few weeks. Hoping it will do better on the open hwy than the automatic. I think manuals are a tad taller in gearing in top gear compared to autos. Not 100% sure on this. I'd like to see a comparison table showing rpm in top gear between auto and manuals and the different models of Civics. Side note both my stock Civics require at least 89 octane in the summer due to detonation even though they are rated for 87. Most people have no clue what detonation sounds like. It also kills your mpg.
these questions have no concrete answers... it all depends on how you drive. If you drive 75+mph on the highway you won't be getting anything near 40+mpg. Occassionally if the conditions are good, sometimes you can but that's another story.
If you drive 60mph consistently, you should be able to get 40+mpg on the highway. I do 80% of my driving on the highway and that's what I get driving that slow. When I drive 70-75, I tend to get around 38-39mpg. If you gun it a lot or drive 80+, you'll get mid to high 30's.
It all really varies. But you'll be surprised how much difference going slower (even by 5mph) makes on your mpg. You're using up most of the fuel overcoming air resistance past 50mph or so... It's really wasteful...
