Need help with 02 Civic EX

I just started having some major problems with my 02 Civic Ex ,115k miles, Manual Tranny

On my way to the wash this morning i was stopingfor a red light and as i put in the clutch and pressed the brakes instead of going to idle thetach just dropped to 0 and the car died. It just stopped idling.I tried starting it but couldn't without holding the gas down.It startedshaking and rattlingfrom thedriver side engine bay itgot worse and worsethen when i got on the highway to get home i could barely get the car up to 55. I had to try and get home without letting off the gas or the car would die. The shaking and loud noises out of the engine bay follow the revs. I am new to the Civic and would appreciate any help. Thanks

The knocking sounds like its coming from 1 of the cylinders im not sure. What could cause both these problems at the same time? What could cause it not to idle then go back to working fine?
