Default Need help striping rusty trunk

Hey Guys,
My 04 civic trunk is completely rusty, the rubber membrane is also undermined with water, some of it comes off. I need advise on how to remove the rest. I tryed a heat gun but this stuff is toxic, is ther another method ? After i completely strip the rubber membrane and repaint, what do i put in place, Dyna mat or can i buy this membrane from honda?

Thanks,
Sid

You can look around for a rust dissolving product such as Naval Jelly (a hardware store would be sure to have such a product). Make sure that you remove it completely, as water later on can reactivate the acid in those products. You also want to get a steel wire brush and scrub the heck out of any rusty spots after using and removing the rust dissolver (then use sandpaper to get the rest off). Rust-Oleum should be used when the rust is off to prevent more from coming back.

Check out JC Whitney's website for the weatherstripping as well. It may be cheaper if you can find the right measurements.

Unless the water damage is your fault, I would take it to the dealer and complain like crazy to the manager. But if it is your fault, i.e. you left the trunk open and it rained, then you need to probably install a new membrane once you clean it up.
