need new 5 spd manual for 91 civic hatch with a d15. What will work?
I've got a 1991 honda civic hatch. its got a d15 1.5 liter motor with a 4 spd stick. I want to put a 5 spd in it. But i dont know what transmissions will work in it. will any tranny from a d series motor work with my motor? does it have to be a specific year?

If you want it to bolt right in, it needs to be from an 88 to 91. The later models have hydraulic clutch instead of a cable and a different motor mount on the end.

and does it have to be from a d series motor?

All 88 to 91s are D series. There were 3 engines, the CX 8 valve, the DX, LX etc. 16 valve non VTEC, and the Si VTEC. But the transmissions mount the same.

There was no 88-91 CX, but there was an 8-valve engine in 88-91 and it came in the CRX HF. There were also more than 3 engines... D15B1, D15B2, D15B3, D15B6, D16A6 I think you are confused with 92-95 Civics. Anyway, OP if you want a 5-speed, you can use a transmission from any 88-91 Civic except for the 3-door STD trim level... it has a 4 speed transmission. It will fit too but you said you want a 5-speed. The 88-91 Civic Si, CRX Si, and 90-91 Civic EX (D16A6) transmission is going to be the shortest geared and offer the best acceleration. The others will be longer geared and should yield slightly better gas mileage. |
Same situation, just got a '91 hf 4 speed Civic hatch and found a five speed in a '90 front wheel drive station wagon Civic. Can someone please let me know if there will be a problem with this swap? Does anyone know what gear ratio it might have. Would it have the ratio of a hf 5 speed or a dx 5 speed. Any help is appriciated. Thanks
