Seems a little high to me. I don't know if you're mechanically inclined or even have the workspace or tools, but the sway bar links and oil pan gasket isn't too hard of a diy. The head gasket is a little trickier if you've never worked on an engine before.

You could easily find someone you know that is knowledgable about cars to help you replace a head gasket. $600 is a little steep

$600 isn't terrible for the head gasket. If you don't know cars fork over the money or if youre in the bay area I'll do it for $300.

What's the possibility of the head needed to be machined if I do it myself?

Was it overheated to any degree? And it's a must to check the head and deck.

Does this look right? I've got a little leak on the driveway. Doesn't look tight to me!

is that oil? or water?
that might be a main seal from crank.
have you done a compression test?
does it overheat?
does it have water in the oil?
does it have alot of white smoke coming out the exhaust?
