so the car I'm getting tomorrow, the left outer CV boot is torn. I did not ask any details, the message was just left on my phone, but he said I could take it and everythign else looks good. How long can you drive a car with it torn before fixing it? I dont quite have the extra cash right now, but will it be ok if I drive it for a few days at least? well really like 2 days? I've heard of people driving with them torn, and knowing they were torn, for over 6 months. I would like to replace the boot before having to replace the axle, because teh boots are pretty cheap. as long as you want its just gonna make a really loud hig h pitched sound while driving and mainly while turning

If you're intending to replace the boot instead of the whole axle you should not go far because dirt will get into the joint and ruin it. But if you're going to change the axle anyway, you can usually go for quite a while with it getting louder and louder before it fails completely. Should that happen, the car will need to be towed, which ups the repair bill.

You could try one of those zip-on boots which can be applied without removing the axle, this would potentially buy you lots of time if it works but they always seemed half-- to me.
